Speaking from Geneva today, World Health Organization’s Dr. Marie Paule Kieny has announced that an Ebola vaccine is being prepared, and may be available as early as January.
According to Kieny, the vaccine would use a serum developed from the blood of patients who have survived the infection. This serum would contain the right antibodies to fight the disease.
It is not known at this point though how much of the serum would initially be available, and whether or not it would be enough to treat all patients who may need it. It is also uncertain if this vaccine would be effective pre- or post-infection, or both.
