Widespread ‘petrol stretching’ affecting hundreds of motorists nationwide

The Transport Committee is due to meet with officials from the Revenue Commissioners to discuss the “petrol stretching” issue.

The practice involves adding as much as 10% of the much cheaper kerosene spirit to petrol. This contamination may cause severe damage to engines, sometimes rendering the vehicle unusable. Telltale signs of tainted fuel include lack of engine power, piston misfiring, or a knocking noise in the engine block.

The Revenue Commissioners has received a great deal of complaints about the practice so far this year.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy John O’Mahony said “Up and down the country, there are hundreds of people that are affected by this and are looking for solutions.”

The issue of whether or not affected motorists should receive compensation from their insurers will also be discussed
