Yes, Mr President: Bertie Ahern is now the leading favourite to succeed Michael D. Higgins

Bookmakers across the country are calling it for Ahern, for now at least.

The former Taoiseach and Fianna Fail leader, Bertie Ahern is now one of the clear favourites to succeed Michael D Higgins as the next President of Ireland.

Mr Ahern who was remarkably asked to rejoin the Fianna Fail party before Christmas is now just 6/1 to take the top position at Aras an Uachtarain when President Higgins steps down.

The Former Taoiseach is becoming ever more popular with bookmakers after he was installed as an outsider last year, with his odds now shortening from 7/1 to just  6/1.

The news of Mr Ahern’s shortened odds will now put him almost on par with current favourite for the position Mairead McGuinness who is at 11/2.

Meanwhile surprisingly RTE presenter Miriam O’Callaghan, is placed at 7/1 to take office.

Speaking about Mr Ahern’s shortened odds a spokesman for one of the countries leading bookmakers said “it would be foolish from our point of view not to install Mr Ahern as one for the favourites given his vast political experience and the major amount of support he has received from voters in the past.”
