A young child under the age of four is currently in serious condition in hospital following a fire at house in Co Wexford on Friday.

The young child who is currently being treated at University Hospital Waterford, was left in serious condition following the fire which broke out at a house on Mary Street in New Ross.

It is believed the child and four other family members which included two other children and two adults, were trapped on the second floor of the house after the fire broke out at approximately 3.30pm yesterday afternoon.

However all five residents of the house who who have been treated for smoke inhalation, were apparently rescued by man aged in his 50s who managed to make his way to the family, after he noticed smoke coming from the house whilst he was working on a premises next door.

Gardaí investigating the incident say the scene currently remains cordoned off in order to allow for a forensic examination to take place in order to determine the cause of the fire.
