Young girl airlifted to hospital after falling whilst hiking in Co Clare

An 11-year-old girl had to be rescued yesterday evening after she suffered an injury in a fall whilst hiking in Co Clare.

It is understood that the Irish Coast Gaurd were called in to airlift the young girl after she suffered an ankle injury whilst hiking with her mother and another family member on Aillwee Mountain in the Burren.

Gardaí say the young girls mother raised the alarm at approximately 5.00pm yesterday evening after it became apparent that they could not make their way back on foot.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, which had been on a training mission in the area at the time, was diverted to the scene and requested to locate the family.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard and an ambulance were also informed of the incident and proceeded to the scene.

Thankfully they were quickly located and flown to an open field below Aillwee Cave where a nearby ambulance was waiting.

The young child was then quickly taken to a nearby hospital were she recieved treatment for her injuries.
