A five year old Irish boy is currently in intensive care in a Spanish hospital following a hit and run incident at a popular holiday resort.

According to The Irish Mirror newspaper, the young boy was struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing in Salou, which is located South East of the city of Tarragona on Monday.

Although it is believed that the young boy is in intensive care, it is not thought that he suffered any life threatening injuries following the collision.

Police authorities in the Spanish resort have since confirmed that a man has since been arrested after he turned himself in following the incident which apparently occurred at 11:45pm.

Officers investigating the incident say the man failed a breath test and he was three times over the legal Spanish drink driving limit.
