23-year-old Colin Nathaniel Scott lost his life after falling into a boiling hot acidic spring at Yellowstone National Park.
The young tourist left the boardwalk the ranger told the tour to follow him on. Yellowstone Superintendent Dan Wenk has said that the tragic incident shows why it is important for visitors to stay on the designated boardwalks as the hot springs and geysers blast steaming water.
Scott and his sister Sable had traveled about 225 yards off the boardwalk on Tuesday when he slipped and fell into the hot spring in the Norris Geyser Basin. No remains were recovered.
The death occurred in one of the hottest and most volatile areas of Yellowstone, where boiling water of over 400 degrees in temperature flows just beneath a thin rock crust.
Since 1890, at least 22 hot spring related deaths at Yellowstone according to park officials.
