?BREAKING: UK stops flights from South Africa in fear of ‘the worst variant we’ve seen so far’ called the B.1.1.59

Mutations in the B.1.1.529 variant likely elude the immune response generated by previous infection and vaccination, UK experts have announced.

The UK is introducing travel restrictions for six African countries due to a new variant of COVID that UK experts have called ‘the worst we’ve seen so far’.

Health Minister Sajid Javid tweeted: “UKHSA (UK Health Security Agency) is investigating a new variant. More data is needed but we’re taking precautions now.

“Six African countries will be added to the red list, flights will be temporarily banned, and UK travellers must quarantine.”

Mr Javid said the new B.1.1.529 variant identified in South Africa was possibly more transmissible than the Delta strain, warning that the vaccines we currently have may be less effective.

The UKHSA says it’s “the worst we’ve seen so far” and has a spike protein that’s “significantly different” from the original COVID strain.
