The world’s oldest known person, Lucile Randon, has died aged 118, her spokeswoman has confirmed.

Lucile Randon, known around the world as Sister André, was born in the south of France on February 11, 1904, a decade before the First World War.

She became the world’s oldest person last April when Kane Tanaka of Japan died aged 119.

He died in his sleep at his nursing home in Toulon, spokesman David Tavella said.

“There is great sadness but it was her wish to join her beloved brother. For her, it’s a release,” said Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure rest home.

“People say work kills, work kept me alive, I kept working until I was 108,” the Catholic nun previously said.

Born Lucile Randon in 1904 in Alès, in the south of France, Sister André’s days are marked by prayer, meals, visits from other residents and hospices, as well as an incessant flow of letters, to which almost all respond.

In 2021, he even survived a Covid-19 infection, becoming a beacon of hope for people around the world.
