Teachers’ unions call for extra measures for schools’ reopening and express concern about staff absences

It is being reported that warnings have been issued by teachers’ unions in Ireland who fear that thousands of staff will be absent when schools reopen after Christmas.

According to RTE, the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) has expressed concerns that children may not be able to continue learning inside schools between now and the midterm break but instead may have to take part in remote learning programmes.

Together with the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI), they have called for additional measures to improve the safety of schools.  These would include higher grade medical masks and school filters.

The Minister of Education, Norma Foley, has accepted that there will be issues to be overcome but that additional measures will be put in place to assist with the reopening of schools.
