Hundreds of anti-lockdown protesters have been arrested in Australia as their government continues with draconian lockdowns where citizens are mostly confined to their homes and have strict limits on socialising.
During an anti-lockdown protest in the city of Melbourne this weekend, approximately 4000 anti-lockdown protesters let off flares and played music. State police moved in and arrested 218 people and issued more than 200 fines of €3,200 (AU$5,450) each.
Six state police officers were taken to hospital and three people remained in custody for allegedly assaulting police reports the Irish Times.
In Sydney, the BBC reported that police had stopped about 38,000 cars heading into the city centre and handed out 260 infringement notices to people across the state suspected of breaching lockdown regulations.
The protests came hours after a lockdown in Sydney was extended until the end of September to slow the spread of a Covid outbreak.
