A married Irish woman has been detained on suspicion of sexually assaulting a man at the spa of a hotel in Magaluf, where she was reportedly staying with her husband, reports Breaking News.
She appeared in court after being accused of touching the alleged victim’s genitals without his permission.
The woman was escorted into the courthouse in Palma, the capital of Majorca, by an armed police officer.
Authorities are expected to release further details about the arrest, which took place on Wednesday, in due course, reports Breaking News.
The Irish holidaymaker, who has not been publicly identified, was granted bail by a judge still investigating the case.
The alleged incident occurred around 6pm on Tuesday. The identity of the hotel has not been disclosed.
According to a police report submitted to the court, the Swedish man was already inside the hotel sauna when the Irish woman entered, sat near him, and began a conversation by asking how long he had been in Magaluf, reports Breaking News.
She exited the sauna and briefly swam in a nearby pool before going into a Turkish steam bath, where the alleged assault took place, the report stated.
It is understood that the male tourist informed hotel staff after telling the woman to stop as she “sexually molested” him without warning, prompting staff to contact police, reports Breaking News.
Although she denied any wrongdoing when questioned at the hotel, she later told the judge in court that she regretted her actions and had mistakenly believed the man was interested in her.
Authorities have not officially confirmed her reported admission during court proceedings.
Sources confirmed the woman admitted in court to touching the Swedish man’s genitals but said it was a misunderstanding, as she believed there was mutual interest following casual conversation, reports Breaking News.
Police insiders also clarified that the male guest had entered the steam room where the alleged incident occurred after she was already inside. The pair had earlier spoken in a nearby sauna, contrary to initial reports.
The insider said: “She’s very embarrassed about what happened. She declined to answer police questions at the station but did speak in court and say she had touched the man’s genitals after some small talk because she thought he was interested in her. As soon as he asked her to stop and said he didn’t want her to continue, she did stop,” reports Breaking News.
“The court will now have to decide whether a crime took place but for the time being this woman remains under judicial investigation, although she has not been formally accused at this stage of any crime,” reports Breaking News.
The name of the hotel involved is not being disclosed, partly to safeguard the identity of the Swedish man.
A source added: “The woman was arrested on Tuesday evening and spent that night in a police cell before being taken to court the following day,” reports Breaking News.
