The AIB has issued a warning about an increase in scams when victims are purportedly contacted by a courier or taxi driver who was dispatched by the bank to retrieve their credit card, reports RTE.
The bank stated that it has also heard of incidents in the past few days where con artists instructed victims to place their cards beneath front door mats for pickup.
Customers have been asked to exercise caution as so-called “taxi scam” fraud is on the rise.
Customers are tricked into falling for this scam by getting a fake text message with a link to click that appears to be from a bank, utility provider, or other respectable firm, reports RTE.
Consumers give personal, login, and card information to the phoney website because they think the content is authentic.
After that, they get a follow-up call from someone posing as their bank informing them that their card has been hacked and has to be picked up.
They are occasionally instructed to submit their pin code as well, reports RTE.
After that, a courier or cab driver shows up at their address to pick up the card.
Multiple bank cards have occasionally been taken, and some clients thought the individual they were dealing with was an actual member of the bank staff.
Afterwards, ATM withdrawals and payment fraud are made using the pilfered card, reports RTE.
“Fraudsters are becoming more and more sophisticated, and we have seen an increase in the number of cases of this kind of taxi or courier scam in recent weeks,” said AIB’s Head of Financial Crime Mary McHale, reports RTE.
“AIB will never ask customers to hand over their bank card or their bank pin to anyone and we urge customers to end any conversation where someone purporting to be from their bank asks them to do so,” she said, reports RTE.
