There’s been widespread anger on social media after NPHET recommended some drastic measures for children as young as 5 years of age.
Many people are saying that it’s a step too far and that they won’t allow their child to get jabbed.
NPHET, The national public health emergency team has recommended the use of masks for primary school children from the third class onwards. The measure will be reviewed in mid-February but may have to continue after that.
It also recommended that children aged nine and over wear masks on public transport, as well as in retail stores and other public places where the rule currently applies to people aged 13 and over.
NPHET also suggests that children avoid community gatherings, including First Holy Communions, Nativity plays, play dates and other similar seasonal events, for at least the next two weeks.
It also said they must avoid birthday parties, overnight stays, and game dates indoors.
NPHET had also recommended extending the Covid Pass to all environments where there is a high risk of Transmission through close contacts or other activities not yet covered by the current regime.
The government will review the recommendations next week and will likely announce further restrictions in due time.
