As thousands of migrants pour in, Ireland’s new homeless number passes 14,000 for first time

As the number of persons categorised as homeless topped 14,000 for the first time, the number of people in emergency housing shattered records once more, reports The Mirror.

14,009 individuals were listed as homeless in the April homeless report. 4,206 children and 9,803 adults were involved in this.

There were 9,719 adults and 4,147 children in March, when there were 13,866. This is an increase, reports The Mirror.

This indicates that 143 more persons needed emergency housing last month.

Couch surfers and those who sleep in tents are not included in these numbers. Additionally, they exclude the 1,939 asylum applicants who do not have a place to stay, reports The Mirror.

The housing spokesman for Sinn Féin, Eoin Ó Broin, said that “homelessness has increased by 61%” since the Government took office.

He said: “This government and their failing housing plan are the cause of this unacceptable month-on-month rise in homelessness. Only a change of Government and a change of housing plan can reverse the ever rising levels of homelessness. Delivering genuinely affordable homes for workers and families will only be achieved under a Sinn Féin-led government,” reports The Mirror.
