Australia plans to require parental consent of social media companies for users under 16 years of age

Australia plans to require parental consent of social media companies for users under the age of 16 and threatens internet platforms for failing to comply with fines of up to AU $10 million (€6 million).

Social media companies, including anonymous forums like Reddit and smartphone dating apps like Bumble, should also take all reasonable steps to determine the age of users and prioritize children’s interests.

The proposed new rules would make Australia one of the toughest countries on social media age controls, building on efforts to harness the power of big technology, following mandatory media license payments and plans to toughen laws against online misinformation and defamation.
