
Moya Brennan, the renowned Irish singer best known as the lead vocalist of Clannad, has died aged 73. The Donegal musician passed away peacefully at her home in Gaoth Dobhair on Monday, April 13,
Born Máire Philomena Nà Bhraonáin on August 4, 1952, in Gweedore, Brennan rose to international fame with her family band Clannad. Their atmospheric blend of traditional Irish folk, Gaelic lyrics and contemporary sounds brought Celtic music to a global audience. The group earned Grammy and BAFTA awards, recorded around 25 albums and sold millions of records worldwide. Hits such as the theme from Harry’s Game and contributions to film soundtracks, including The Last of the Mohicans, highlighted her ethereal voice and harp playing.
In later years, Brennan continued performing and recording as a solo artist while also engaging in philanthropic work. She was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis but remained active in music until recently. She is survived by her husband Tim Jarvis and her two children, Aisling and Paul, who both performed and recorded with her.
Brennan’s passing marks the end of an era for Irish traditional and Celtic music.
