A severe weather alert has been issued by Met Eireann for the entire island of Ireland due to an impending storm named Eowyn. Storm Eowyn is expected to bring “powerful and disruptive winds” along with some transient snowfall, particularly in the northwest.
The Republic of Ireland’s forecasting agency, Met Éireann, has issued a nationwide Status Orange wind warning effective from 2am to 5pm on Friday. They predict gale force southerly winds turning westerly, with severe, damaging, and destructive gusts reaching up to 130km/h (80mph), and potentially even higher in some areas.
The expected impacts include:
  • Fallen trees and damage to power lines leading to potential outages.
  • Structural damage to buildings.
  • Very difficult travel conditions, with disruptions and cancellations to various transport modes.
  • Wave overtopping in coastal areas.
The UK Met Office has also issued a Yellow Wind warning for Northern Ireland for all of Friday, advising of likely power cuts and disruptions to road, rail, air, and ferry services. There’s a risk of injuries or danger to life from flying debris and coastal hazards.
This follows a recent cold snap that left tens of thousands without power, highlighting the potential severity of the upcoming storm. The public is urged to prepare for significant weather impacts and follow updates from weather authorities.
