The UK has officially left the European Union and the internal market and the transition period is over. Big Ben is ringing all over London to mark the moment. It is a time of celebration or compassion, but many people will drink an hour before midnight anyway. The formal transition took place on December 31, 2020 at 11 p.m., one hour before midnight, as the UK is one hour behind European time.
It took four years, six months and eight days for people to vote in the European referendum of June 23, 2016. Since then, we have had three prime ministers, a failed campaign for a second referendum, global protests and a global pandemic.
