Diane Ladd, the acclaimed three-time Oscar-nominated actress known for her unforgettable roles in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Chinatown, and Wild at Heart, passed away today at her home in Los Angeles. She was 89.

Ladd’s daughter, fellow Oscar winner Laura Dern, confirmed the news on social media, sharing a heartfelt tribute: “My brilliant, fierce mama walked her final trail today. Her light, love, and laughter will echo forever.” No cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Born Rose Diane Ladner in 1935 in Mississippi, Ladd’s career spanned over 200 films and TV shows, blending grit, humor, and vulnerability. She earned Best Supporting Actress nods for Alice and Rambling Rose, and a Best Actress bid for Wild at Heart. Her chemistry with ex-husband Bruce Dern shone in collaborations like Rambling Rose, while her bond with Dern inspired their 2023 memoir Honey, Baby, Mine.

Ladd endured profound loss, including the drowning of her first daughter at 18 months, which she channeled into resilient performances. “Life’s a spiral,” she once said. “You keep climbing.”

Tributes poured in from Hollywood peers. Martin Scorsese called her “a force of nature.” Dern added, “She taught me to fight for stories that matter.”

Funeral arrangements are pending. Ladd leaves behind Dern and a legacy of bold storytelling.
