Calls for A&E departments to review security after nurses say they were punched and threatened

The HSE was asked to conduct a full safety review of emergency rooms at hospitals across the country after nurses said they had been beaten, threatened, abused and intimidated by patients.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization said abuses are increasing and the problem has often gone unreported.

“We had a review of the security at Emergency Departments conducted in 2016, we have sought to have that review repeated, because clearly if assaults are on the increase, something is wrong” said Phil Ni Sheaghdha, the organisation’s general secretary, reports RTE.

Nurses working in crowded emergency rooms told RTÉ’s This Week program that they had been assaulted and threatened at work.
