Cash is King! New legislation on ‘access to cash’ will see its first week in action

A new regulation requiring financial institutions to ensure that an ATM is available within 10km of most homes and businesses has come to effect.

In one of his initial actions as Minister for Finance, Simon Harris is expected today to formally sign the order that secures nationwide access to cash, reports RTE.

The Oireachtas approved the legislation introducing these new ‘access to cash’ rules last May.

However, once the legislation was passed, the Central Bank was tasked with gathering detailed data on ATM locations and cash services across the country, reports RTE.

That work has now been completed, and the final step is among the first matters to reach the desk of the newly appointed Finance Minister.

Mr Harris is to sign the directive that will require financial institutions to maintain cash access points in towns and villages throughout Ireland, reports RTE.

He said the move will be particularly significant for rural communities, many of which have faced branch closures in recent years.
