Changing her stance? McDonald says it’s ‘common sense’ to deport immigrants for serious crimes

The head of Sinn Féin has stated that deporting immigrants who commit severe crimes is “common sense,” reports Breaking News.

Following reports that Claire Kerrane, the party’s integration spokesman and candidate for Roscommon-Galway, had removed a social media post in which she advocated for deportation to be taken into consideration for every immigrant who commits a crime, Mary Lou McDonald made her remarks.

“What Claire said is just a matter of plain common sense,” Ms. McDonald stated while speaking on the Waterford campaign route on Saturday, reports Breaking News.

According to Ms. McDonald, the remarks are consistent with Irish legislation, which allows for the return of a person to their home country in cases when they have committed violent or significant crimes.

The order can only be issued in the interest of public safety if the person is a minor or has lived in Ireland for more than ten years.

The Sinn Féin leader said: “Where somebody is convicted of a serious violent offence, there is the option to return that person to their home state, or to their country of origin. That, to me, just makes sense. This is about community safety. This is about where a crime is committed, that there is a sanction and a penalty for it, just as if an Irish person in Australia were to commit a serious offence, they’d be sent packing – and rightly so,” reports Breaking News.

Ms. McDonald said earlier this year that Sinn Féin had carried out an internal investigation following its own poor performance in the local and European elections.

She disclosed that high-ranking Sinn Féin officials were “disappointed” with her interactions with the party’s supporters.

Ms. McDonald was instructed to provide further details on its immigration and other practices, reports Breaking News.

It is “not too late” for Sinn Féin to rule out forming a coalition with Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael, according to People Before Profit (PBP).

It follows Mary Lou McDonald, the head of Sinn Féin, refusing to rule out a future collaboration of this kind, reports Breaking News.
