The number of applications for Irish passports will surpass one million by the end of this year, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
It’s believed that many of the applicants will be British born residents.
The predication comes after recent figures showed that there was a 26% increase of applications for the first three months of this year.
Figures also show that requests from Britain and Northern Ireland were up 68% in the first quarter of 2017.
A department spokesperson said the fallout from the UK’S exit from the EU is the main contributing factor for the surge in applications.
