Comb the pain: Gripping a comb during childbirth can apparently ease labour pains

We all know that birth of child is a truly wonderful and joyus occasion, but as many women know the process of giving birth is the most painful thing you will ever experience and no amount drugs or supported techniques will help you on the day.

However women about to give birth may be given hope as one helpful tip involving a simple hair comb has been spreading across social media in recent days.

According to the Fox Valley Birth and Baby Facebook page, women experiencing painful contractions are best advised to squeeze a fine tooth comb so your brain is distracted from the painful contractions.

In the descriptive post the page wrote: “When gripped in your hands, a comb can help hit acupuncture points in your hands helping your body forget about the contractions.”

“It plays into the gate control pain theory. This theory states that the brain can only focus on a select number of sensations at once.”

“Because the nerve ending on your hands are closer to your brain, they reach your brain faster.”

The page even goes on to advise expecting mums to hold the base of the comb at the end of their fingers therefore the teeth will be precisely placed on the centre of their palms.

Although the technique has been met with positive responses, many women remain skeptical if the technique would work on the day.

However in a series of responses many expecting mums said they would give it ago, whilst many women who have previously given birth said they wish they have had thought of the idea before going into labour.
