A committee has been setup by the Garda Commissioner and several Government Ministers are due to discuss the recent spike in carjackings.

This follows the most recent car jacking in Dublin were a man aged in his 20s was killed yesterday morning.
The man in question was a passenger in a taxi which was hijacked before crashing a short time later near St James’ Hospital.

Gardaí are understood to be questioning a second man in his 20s, who is believed to have been driving the car.

Minister Leo Varadkar has said he was “very worried” about the sudden rise in carjacking incidents, and will raise it at a ministerial level.
“Carjackings are not something that happen commonly in Ireland, but there have been five in the last couple of months.
I’m going to have to talk to Alan Kelly about it – he’s the Minister with responsibility for the taxi industry, and then, as well, I need to talk to the gardaí about it too.
“We have a regular road safety ministerial-level committee that meets every couple of months, and I’m going to ask that it be on the agenda for that.”
