An acute shortage of respirators around Britain might literally become a life or death situation rather soon, should British hospitals become overwhelmed over the coming days.
New ethics guidelines, issued by the British Medical Association’s (BMA), mean that UK doctors might soon be faced with the grim decision of granting access to respirators only to patients ‘most likely to survive,’ while leaving others to their fate.
The guidelines specify that, if it comes to making a choice, doctors should assess which patients will benefit the most and quicker from respirator access, while others might be given palliative treatment to ease their passing.
A total of 2,352 people have so far died from Covid-19-related causes in the UK.
