The NHS has confirmed that UK patients suffering severe symptoms of Covid-19 will be given a drug originally designed to treat Ebola to speed up their recovery.
The patients will receive the antiviral drug remdesivir, after initial trials showed that the drug reduced patients’ symptoms after 11 days. Severe Covid-19 disease usually lasts up to 15 days.
Remdesivir is not being touted as a ‘cure’ for Covid-19, but does appear to be effective in shortening the disease’s course.
