Crackdown: Gardai to be out in force tonight to catch speeders and drink drivers

The May Bank Holiday weekend is notorious for being one of the busiest weekends of the year and the gardai say that they’ll be out in force until Monday evening.

A number of road safety campaigns have been launched in an effort to prevent crashes or the tragic loss of life from such an incident.

Road safety authorities have once again urged drivers to refrain from using their mobile phones while at the wheel, after it emerged that Gardai caught almost 5,000 motorists doing so in recent times.

Statistics show that using a mobile phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident four-fold.

If caught, drivers face three penalty points and a €60 fine.

Meanwhile last month more people died on our roads. One social media user said:
“Shane Ross might as well not be in a job with the little good he appears to be making in terms of roads death number.”

“Drink driving ban made no difference, if anything more people are dying on the roads and it’s not to do with speed, it’s to do with bad driving in many cases”.
