Jenny Maher swallowed half the liquid inside the Surf tablet after biting into it and was rushed to A&E at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
Sarah Maher,35, the child’s mother had done a first aid course which covered poisoning so the she was able to act fast and rush Jenny to hospital.
The incident occurred two weeks ago.
Colin Maher, 39 discussed the frightening incident “It was very serious and very scary. Her airways had closed up, only for we got her to hospital so soon she wouldn’t be here today”
Jenny’s parents had realized something was wrong when they found the press under the sink open, revealing the Surf tablets.
Moments later, their young daughter vomited and her breathing became distressed.
“I watched it happen, it happened in a matter of seconds”, Sarah stated.
At the hospital, Jenny was put on a ventilator, an hour later she was taken to Temple Street and was put into intensive care.
The 17 month old was on nine different medications including, relaxants, morphine and antibiotics.
Two weeks later the child is still recovering and her parents are pleading with other guardians and parents to keep all harmful substances away from young children.
