Twitter has been slammed by critics after a hacking rampage saw some of the platform’s biggest users compromised on Wednesday.
Using stolen employee credentials, the unidentified hackers took over the accounts of Joe Biden, Kim Kardashian, Barack Obama and Elon Musk among others.
They proceeded to address millions of followers asking for digital currency Bitcoin to be wired to a number of addresses, netting over 120,000$ from 400 victims.
Making matters worse is Twitter’s admission that they are not sure if the hackers perpetrated any other ‘malicious activity’ on the platform during their spree.
The tech giant’s slow response to the attack was described by one cybersecurity CEO as ‘astonishing’. Another expert said that the criminals may have been ‘pilfering data in addition to using this tweet scam as a distraction’.
