Disgraceful: The number of homeless people in Ireland increases to 14,159 in May

The Department of Housing’s most recent statistics show that there were 14,159 homeless persons in May, a significant rise over the previous month, reports Breaking News.

According to April’s statistics, more than 14,000 were registered for the first time since records began.

9,843 people, 4,316 children, and 2,051 households are included in the May statistics.

Focus Ireland has demanded that the government respond immediately, pointing out that there were 16% more families in emergency housing this month than there were in the same month previous year.

“Homelessness creates huge pain for everyone involved, with children suffering the most. It is truly heartbreaking that when many schools are closing for the summer holidays, 4,316 children don’t have a home,” Focus Ireland chief executive Pat Dennigan said, reports Breaking News.

“The aim must be to end long-term homelessness, as opposed to managing it through providing more emergency beds. This is why our pre-budget submission to the Government calls for an urgent increase in the annual social housing targets and measures for homelessness prevention,” reports Breaking News.
