Drew Harris suggests changes are needed to public order laws after ‘very concerning’ rise in harassment of politicians




Following many events at the houses of politicians, including Taoiseach Simon Harris, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has urged for changes to be made to public order legislation, reports Independent.

Speaking before to this Friday’s Garda graduation ceremony at Templemore Training College, which honoured 157 new recruits to the force, Commissioner Harris expressed his worries about events being reported by county council members in addition to senators and TDs.

“For every complaint we get, we mount a full investigation. We’ve brought individuals to justice. I am very concerned about incidents that happened during the recent election campaign,” reports Independent.

“There are a number of investigations that we want to bring to fruition before the next election campaign, whenever that might be. Protest is protected, but also the dwelling. The family home is also protected in the Constitution. We want to be clear that we balance that in terms of protecting the homes of individuals, including politicians, from those instances which go beyond protest, which look like intimidation and harassment,” reports Independent.

Commissioner Harris hinted that when the Gardaí get greater insight into the strategies used by individuals engaged and the volume of instances, parts of the current legislation would need to be updated.
