Dubliner Rhasidat Adeleke wins gold medal at NCAA Championships

Rhasidat Adeleke made history Saturday by winning gold at the NCAA Championships in Texas.

The Dubliner is the first Irish female sprinter to win an NCAA title after winning gold with a time of 49.20, breaking her Irish 400m record again, reports The Mirror.

Incredibly, it was Adeleke’s seventh national record of the year. In April, she also broke the Irish 200m record with a time of 22.34.

She said after the race: “[The race] was kind of a blur, I just went out trusting myself. I’m not really sure what I went through the 200 [mark], I just put myself into position coming into the home stretch, and it was the kick at the end, which is something I’ve been doing well all season,” reports The Mirror.

The 20-year-old is now in the top 20 of the 400m world rankings of all time following his recent success, Ireland’s first NCAA win since Mary Cullen won the 5000m gold for Providence College in 2006, reports The Mirror.
