Economy on lockdown: Figures show retail sales down 12.7% but food, drink and cigarettes are all up

There’s been a hard hit to the worldwide economy from coronavirus, but with lockdown restrictions beginning to lift around the world, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Newly released CSO figures show that retail sales in Ireland are down some 12.7% but that food, drink and cigarettes are all up since lockdown started.

Many people have turned to online purchases during lockdown with some retail experts predicting that there’ll be multiple “bumper” sales in an effort to get people back into retail chain stores.
