Enoch Burke’s mother and sister are in the Dochas Centre in Mountjoy until mid April

Martina Burke and her daughter Ammi Burke were arrested under a High Court order in Co Roscommon on Monday evening.

The High Court had directed the immediate arrest and imprisonment of Enoch Burke’s mother, Martina, and his sister, Ammi, for contempt of court.

The two women were arrested at Castlerea Prison this afternoon.

They had gone to the prison to visit Enoch Burke, who is currently in custody there.

Martina and Ammi were accompanied by Enoch’s father, Sean, and the three of them met with him inside the prison.

After the visit, prison staff contacted gardaí, who were waiting for the family when they left the building.

The court order was then carried out. Martina and Ammi were arrested, and gardaí are escorting them to Dublin.

They are expected to be placed in the Dóchas Centre, the women’s prison at the Mountjoy Prison complex.

On 4 March, Mr Justice Brian Cregan ordered that the two women be jailed for two weeks each following their conduct at a court hearing last month.

The judge said they had repeatedly interrupted the proceedings by shouting and had to be removed from the court by gardaí.

He described the situation as long past the time for the court to end what he called the family circus.

The judge added that it had become clear the Burke family members were impervious to reason and were driven by a faith-based ideology that led them to reject the rule of law.

However, he stressed that the rule of law applies to them and to every citizen, whether they accept it or not.

They’ll both be prison until at least mid April.
