Extra hospital beds the priority as the HSE are given €14.5bn to spend in 2018

The HSE has confirmed this week that The Department of Health has made €14.5bn available to spend on health in 2018.

It is understood the substantial sum which is a €606m increase on 2017’s budget will be made available to cater for extra beds at some of the countries busiest hospitals.

The extra funding which was promised back in October’s budget will also provide support for critical care services and spinal services.

However the budget which will most likely be stretched, will have no overspend available as management at the HSE have been told they must make savings of €346m.

It is expected the HSE plan to cut costs by improving rather than investing in current direct services.
