
Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee has met with Pavee Point after it emerged that she used the word “pikey” in a tweet.
Clifford-Lee said that she was “very sorry” for using the word and the candidate in the Fingal by-election met with representatives of Pavee Point, Traveller rights group about the matter.
After the meeting, Clifford-Lee said she was very sorry for the offence she caused by using the disgraceful word in a tweet and now will be working with members of Pavee Point in the future to help their community.
She told RTE: “What happened back then was totally inappropriate and wrong and I’m very sorry for offending people. It was many years before I was engaged in electoral politics and in no way reflects my opinion on minority issues.”
