A five-month-old infant has sadly lost his life in a road crash in Athlone this afternoon.
The single-vehicle collision happened in the Athlone bypass at approximately 2.15pm.
The car collided with a barrier, and no other vehicle was involved.
The infant was seriously injured and rushed to Portiuncula Hospital, in Ballinasloe, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The male driver and female passenger, both aged in their late 20s, did not sustain any injuries. A three-year-old girl was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The bypass remains closed between junctions 13 and 11 for a forensic examination, and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
