Footballer thug ordered to pay €20,000 for ‘nasty’ off-the-ball match assault in Westmeath




After a “off-the-ball” altercation during a club competition, a GAA player broke another footballer’s eye socket, impairing his vision. Although he escaped jail time, the player was nonetheless ordered to pay €20,000 in compensation, reports Breaking News.

On February 24, 2019, Tom Molloy (26), who was a member of the Westmeath county panel at the time, was playing midfield for his club, Shandonagh, against local rivals Maryland during an away challenge match.

After entering a guilty plea to assault causing hurt to Maryland GAA’s wing-forward Liam Reilly before Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court on Friday, he was given a two-and-a-half-year term, reports Breaking News.

The independent contractor electrician from Rathcolman, Mullingar, County Westmeath, who has never been convicted of a crime before, acknowledged using excessive force and said there had been an earlier altercation during the game.

Because of his injuries, Mr. Reilly required many visits to St. James’s Hospital and the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin for treatment, since he was in excruciating agony. The treatment lasted for a year, reports Breaking News.
