France to ban wild animals from circuses and marine parks

Animal rights activists will welcome the news that France will bring in new laws banning the use of wild animals in travelling circuses and marine parks.

The country’s environmental minister, Barbara Pompili, announced on Tuesday that over the next few years wild animals such as bears, lions, tigers, and elephants will be banned from circuses, ABC reports.

She also said that France’s three marine parks are to be banned from importing or breeding dolphins and killer whales with immediate effect. The minister added that she sought to bring a total end to mink farming, where animals are bred for the fur industry, within the next five years.

Zoos and permanent shows, like safari parks, will be exempt from these new laws and the government has pledged 8 million euros into providing new employment for workers in the circus and marine parks industry.
