Garda goes on trial for sending horrendous messages, burglary and assault

A suspended garda has been sent forward for trial on a series of charges including burglary, criminal damage, assault and the alleged sending of a grossly offensive message.

Alan O’Mahony, who was most recently attached to An Garda Síochána in Letterkenny, appeared before Letterkenny District Court where an order was made sending him forward to the next sitting of the Circuit Court, reports RTE.

Judge Emile Daly formally returned Mr O’Mahony for trial. The accused is facing five separate charges arising from an incident alleged to have occurred in June 2024.

It is alleged that on June 30, 2024, at Wood Park, Lismonaghan, Letterkenny, he entered a property as a trespasser with the intention of committing an arrestable offence, reports RTE.

Mr O’Mahony is also accused of criminal damage after allegedly burning a duvet by throwing a lit cigarette onto it at the same location and on the same date.

In addition, he faces an assault charge involving a man named as Joseph O’Donnell, as well as a charge relating to alleged damage caused to the handle of a house’s front door, reports RTE.

A further allegation claims that around the same date in the Letterkenny area, Mr O’Mahony sent a grossly offensive communication, namely a photograph of a named woman, to another individual.

The court heard that the book of evidence had been served on the accused. Mr O’Mahony was present in court but did not address the proceedings during the brief hearing, reports RTE.

The prosecution told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that the case proceed to the Circuit Court. It was also confirmed that the option of advancing the matter on a signed plea was not taken up by the accused.

Legal aid was granted to Mr O’Mahony, reports RTE.

The court remanded him on bail subject to conditions, including residing at an address previously provided to the court and having no direct or indirect contact with the alleged injured party or any witnesses connected to the case.
