Garda who was helping a broken down motorist and got struck with a car is still in critical condition

A garda remains in critical condition in hospital after undergoing surgery following a road accident in East Cork.

The accident occurred shortly before 7pm last night on the Youghal ring road.

The garda, which was on duty in an unmarked patrol car, allegedly had to deal with a broken down car on the side of the road when the accident occurred.

He was seriously injured when the patrol car was hit by another vehicle.

The driver of the other car was also transported to hospital, with non-fatal injuries.

Garda received emergency roadside care before being transferred by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

He underwent surgery there overnight.

The N25 road from Cork to Waterford will remain closed until an examination by the Garda forensic traffic accident investigators is completed.

GardaĆ is appealing for any witnesses, including road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling on the N25 Youghal ring road, just before the Clashadonna junction, between 6:40 pm and 7:00 pm of yesterday evening.

In particular, gardaĆ would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle broken down and the garda car stopped.
