After gardaí discovered cider and whisky in the cup holders of a Cork driver’s van, the driver faces jail time and a large fine, reports The Mirror.

On Tuesday, near Glanmire, Gardaí noticed a vehicle exploiting the hard shoulder to overtake traffic recklessly. When asked to stop, the driver of the van refused to halt by the officers.

After trying to avoid capture, the daring driver was eventually captured when two more garda units from Mitchelstown and Fermoy joined.

The motorist is accused of attacking a garda who was on duty during the event in addition to failing a breathalyser test conducted at the scene.

A spokesperson wrote on X: “Yesterday afternoon, a Garda saw a van dangerously overtaking traffic by using the hard shoulder on the M8 close to Glanmire Co. Cork,” reports The Mirror.

“When prompted to stop, the driver failed to do so. Additional assistance was provided by two Garda Units from Mitchelstown and Fermoy, and the vehicle was eventually safely stopped,” reports The Mirror.

“It quickly became clear why the driver was so eager to evade us. He failed a roadside breath test,” reports The Mirror.
