Gardai in Co Dublin appealing for information after 50,000 baby lettuce plants stolen

Gardai in Co Dublin are appealing for information after fifty thousand baby lettuce plants have been stolen from a yard in Rush.

It is understood that the plants were being stored on truck which was due to make a delivery. Gardai say the van in which the baby lettuces were being transported was stolen from a yard on the Lower Channel Road in Rush at approximately 6.20 am yesterday morning. Gardai have since released a description of the vehicle, the van is understood to be a Mitsubishi Canter, registration 07 WW 4693.

Meanwhile the owner of the vehicle Brian McNamara has since made a brief statement regarding the theft, Mr McNamara said: “They are in a compost block in a yellow create. We buy them in from the UK, and only got them in on Wednesday.”
He went onto say: “If the lettuces are not planted by Tuesday, they will all die as they need water and sunlight to survive”.

It is believed that the plants were  due to be planted out in glasshouses yesterday and today, and were intended for supply to supermarkets across the country in about eights weeks’ time.
