Gardai say people need to be vigilant after multiple cases of “key fishing”

Gardaí in Meath are urging the public to be careful where they keep their car keys following several reports of car keys being stolen in the county, reports The Mirror.

Car key fishing is the use of a long hook or magnet to extract car keys from a letterbox.

To help people protect their cars and valuables, Gardai’s Meath Division has put in place a number of measures to prevent your car from being broken into or even taken by yourself.

In a post on Facebook, Gardaí said: “There have been a number of reports of car key ‘fishing’ in the Meath Division recently, resulting in vehicles being stolen. Criminals look for an opportunity, don’t make it easy for them,” reports The Mirror.

In the post, the gardaí also urged people to remember:

– Always keep your car keys out of sight of windows, doors and letterboxes when you store them at home.

– Always make sure your vehicle is locked and alarmed, even if parked on private property.
Do not leave valuables in the vehicle.

– Never leave your belongings in plain sight in the car, and don’t make the mistake of hiding your belongings in the car after parking. You never know who’s watching.

– Never leave the vehicle unattended with the key in the ignition.
