Gaza ceasefire deal to come into effect on this morning

After Israel’s cabinet approved the truce and agreement to free hostages and prisoners, mediator Qatar said that a ceasefire in the battle in Gaza will start tomorrow morning, reports RTE.

Israeli assaults on Gaza have persisted after the accord was announced Wednesday by Qatar and the United States, which negotiated the arrangement alongside Egypt.

A attack on a family’s tent in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, killed at least five of them, according to Gaza’s civil defence rescue organisation, reports RTE.

After air raid sirens sounded and the military said a rocket had been fired from Yemen, whose Iran-backed Houthi rebels claim to help the Palestinians, explosions were heard above Jerusalem.

Before air raid sirens sounded once more in southern Israel in the afternoon and the IDF claimed to have intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, the Houthis claimed to have attacked the Israeli Defence Ministry, reports RTE.

“As coordinated by the parties to the agreement and the mediators, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip will begin at 8:30 am (6.30am Irish time) on Sunday,” Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said, reports RTE.

“The government has approved the hostage return plan,” the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the cabinet vote, reports RTE.

According to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, terrorists in Gaza would free 33 captives during the first 42-day truce.

Sheikh Mohammed said that the framework that was inked this week was identical to the one that was decided upon on December 23 and that it was “13 months of a waste of negotiating details” before speaking to Sky News, reports RTE.

On the night before Donald Trump is sworn in for a second term as US president, the truce will go into force.

The Palestinian Authority, which has administrative authority over a portion of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, has finished preparing “to assume full responsibility in Gaza” following the conflict, according to Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, reports RTE.
