General Election: Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin pledges to change laws in regards to compulsory retirement age

Fianna Fail’s Micheal Martin has said that if elected he plans on changing the laws in relation to the retirement age.

Speaking on RTE radio, Martin said:
“If on the one hand the State is saying the pension age should go to 67, then having people for two years in a limbo situation is not sustainable and acceptable.”

Martin said that Fianna Fail would review moving retirement to 67 on the basis that there needs to be what he described a “level playing pitch”.

Martin said that compulsory retirement at 65 needed to change and that he would look for a more graduated retirement system.

Meanwhile, RTE report that Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar said leaving the State pension age below 67 would be “irresponsible” and “reforming makes sense”.

Mr Varadkar said: “If pensions are going to be sustainable into the future, we will need to increase the pension age along with life expectancy.”
