According to the Vatican, Pope Francis has exhibited a “gradual, slight improvement” in recent days and is responding well to treatment for double pneumonia, reports Breaking News.

According to a Vatican statement, the 88-year-old, who has chronic lung illness and had a portion of one lung removed when he was a young man, has been stable for many days with no fever and good blood oxygen levels.

He is still in danger, though, since they have chosen to maintain his prognosis as guarded, reports Breaking News.

Such steadiness “as a consequence testifies to a good response to therapy,” according to the experts.

For the first time, medical professionals have said that Francis is reacting favourably to the therapy for the complicated lung infection that was identified during his hospitalisation on February 14, reports Breaking News.

Following several episodes of severe respiratory crises last week, Francis’ condition had stabilised as he began his fourth week in Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he worked and relaxed during the day on Saturday.

“In order to record these initial improvements in the coming days as well, his doctors have prudently maintained the prognosis as guarded,” the statement said, reports Breaking News.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin said Mass for an anti-abortion group at St. Peter’s Basilica while he was away, continuing the Vatican’s daily operations. He began by delivering a message from the hospital on behalf of the Pope about the importance of preserving life from conception to natural death.

Francis urged the faithful to support anti-abortion initiatives not just for the unborn but also “for the elderly, no longer independent or the incurably ill” in a March 5 statement to the Movement for Life, which aims to give women alternatives to abortion, reports Breaking News.

The nightly reading of prayers for Francis will be presided over by Canadian Cardinal Michael Czerny, another cardinal intimately linked to Francis’s presidency, later on Saturday.

On Sunday, Cardinal Czerny returns to celebrate the voluntary Holy Year Mass, which Francis was supposed to celebrate.

Francis has been utilising a non-invasive mechanical ventilation mask at night and large amounts of supplementary oxygen throughout the day to assist him breathe, reports Breaking News.
