Good news for migrants working in Ireland as government introduce new maternity leave rules

There was good news for migrant women currently working in Ireland as new rule changes now mean they can leave the EU without losing their benefit.

The move comes after the Government introduced new rules that will allow new mothers or mothers to be to leave the country for short period of time but they will be still entitled to their maternity leave as long as they paid their PRSI.

Speaking about the new rules Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has said the new move will be helpful to women from countries like India and the Philippines currently working in the Irish health service.

Mr Varadkar said: “It’s good news for them, but it actually applies to all women in receipt of maternity benefits.”

“So even if you’re an Irish women who grew up in Ireland, but you want to take your kid to your sister, we’ll say, in America, for a few weeks, you’ll also be able to continue to receive the benefit up to six weeks overseas.”
